Choosing The Right Shed

A How-To Guide

Taking these requirements into account, and that we build all of our Sheds in 2' increments, a good rule of thumb is this:

Find a space that is 3' - 4' larger in all directions than the desired Shed size

OR

Choose a size of Shed that is 3' - 4' smaller than the area you have available, rounding down to the lower 2' increment.

EXAMPLE:

If you have an area that is 10' wide, the widest Shed we can build is 6'.

This is because we must round to the lower 2' increment.

If the 10' space is between 2 fences, we require a total of 3' of this space to work around.

This leaves only 7' of usable space, which would allow a 6' wide Shed.

If you have an area between 2 walls or large trees that is 10' wide, we would require 4' total of space to work around, which would leave 6' of usable space.

If you have an area that is 10' between a wall and a fence, the largest Shed we can build is also 6'.

This is because we need 24" from the wall, and 18" from the fence.

This would leave 6'6" of space, but we must round to the lower 2' increment.

EXAMPLE 2:

If you have a space that is 11' wide, the Shed sizes that would be appropriate are:

- 8' wide between 2 fences, and

- 6' between a fence and a wall or a 2 walls

This is because the total available space in an 11' wide area between two fences is 8', meaning this is the maximum size we can build.

Whereas In the same space between both 2 walls and a wall and a fence, the required space would be 4' and 3'6" respectfully.

In both cases, there is less than 8' of usable Shed space, but more than 6' (7' and 7'6"), but as we must round down, the widest Shed we can build is 6'.

Our requirements are fairly simple:

- 18"-24" of space around the Shed (18" from fences and hedges/24" from anything 7' and taller)

- relatively level area
(4"-6" for Sheds under 140 sq/ft and 2" for Sheds 140 sq/ft and above)

- Power available within 150'

- Overhead tree/branch clearance of approximately 14' from the ground.

For a more detailed version of these requirements, please see "Project Requirements".
